BRACES…SO WHAT CAN'T I EAT?

Eating habits during orthodontic treatment are very important because what you eat can affect the final results of your smile. Eating the wrong things will make a difference in treatment proceeding as estimated. Loose or broken appliances will delay your treatment; teeth do not get straight when appliances are not attached to the teeth. Below are several things you need to avoid throughout orthodontic treatment.

Hard Foods

Ice
Carrots
Corn on the Cob
Apples

Crunchy Foods

Popcorn
Pretzels
Peanuts
Doritos

Sticky Foods

Starburst
Now and Laters
Fruit Chews
Cracker Jack

High Sugar Content Foods

Blow Pops
Gum
Taffy
Soda (Carbonated Drinks)

Do not bite into any bones or foods with your front teeth. Cut up your food small and chew on the back teeth carefully.

If braces come loose because you eat the wrong things, remember, your orthodontic treatment results will not be as good as expected and they will take longer than expected.

…and don't forget to brush!!!

HOW TO BRUSH AND FLOSS WITH BRACES

Brush after every meal. If you cannot brush right away, rinse well with water.

  1. Use a dry brush with a small amount of toothpaste. Place bristles where gums and teeth meet.
  2. Use circular, vibrating motions around the gum lines, 10 seconds on each tooth.
  3. Brush slowly, each arch separately, every tooth.
  4. Brush the lower teeth up and the upper teeth down. Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth, too!

Floss nightly, using floss and floss threaders to remove all the plaque.

  1. Carefully pull unwaxed floss between the wire and braces. A floss threader is helpful to bring the floss under the arch wire.
  2. Floss carefully around the braces. Be sure to remove all plaque from under the gums and the braces.
  3. Floss carefully around the gum area.
  4. Floss carefully around each tooth.

YOUR ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCE

LET'S GO FISHING!

Oral hygiene is very important throughout orthodontic treatment. As an incentive to encourage excellent oral hygiene, we have the “Sand Dollars” grading system. For an “A” in brushing, you receive two “Sand Dollars,” for a “B” in brushing, you receive one “Sand Dollar.” If you wear your Lach Orthodontic “Just Brace It” T-shirt, you receive one “Sand Dollar.” Once you have earned enough “Sand Dollars,” you can “Go Fishing” for some great gifts. “Sand Dollars” cannot be combined with siblings or friends, and they must be redeemed at the time of appliance removal.
